Did You Know That…
…a popular company like Google hires only 1 out of every 500 job applicants?
It is now actually much harder to get into a great company than it is to get into a great college!
Harvard is one of the most selective colleges. They admit only 6% of all students who apply.
Google, by contrast, accepts only 0.2% of all students who apply for a job.
That means it is 30x harder to get into Google than into Harvard.
Getting a job at a popular company is now a major challenge.
…most college grads get stuck with jobs that DO NOT require a college degree?
Because they aren’t prepared for the job search, a full 52% of recent college grads end up compromising and taking jobs that do not even require a college degree.
Would it surprise you to learn that…
549,075 executive assistants have a bachelor’s degree?
481,206 customer service reps have a bachelor’s degree?
323,223 waiters have a bachelor’s degree?
115,520 janitors have a bachelor’s degree?
42,755 mail carriers have a bachelor’s degree?
Not only are these jobs less fulfilling, they also pay less than jobs that do require a degree – like a Financial Analyst, Marketing Assistant, Software Developer or Mechanical Engineer.
How much less? About $20,000/year on average. That’s a tough difference to make up.
Why is This Happening?
More students are going on to college, so there’s more competition.
A generation ago, only 40% of high school grads went to college.
In today’s world, over 70% of all high school grads choose to invest in a college degree.
That’s a lot more competition. As a result, companies have been able to cut back. They’ve reduced campus recruiting. They’ve eliminated most management training programs.
These companies expect good candidates to find the best opportunities on their own.
Online job listings have actually made the job search harder.
I know what you’re thinking. “Hold on. Online listings are so easy to find - and so easy to complete. Don’t they make the job search easier, not harder?”
Here’s the issue. It’s precisely because online listings are so easy to find and complete that companies are now literally swamped with job applications. Most good jobs receive hundreds or even thousands of applications.
This causes two problems.
First, there’s no way the hiring manager is going to review that many resumes. As a result, most companies now use a computer algorithm to automatically reject 90% of all applicants. The lucky few who make it to the next step have their resumes reviewed by a junior manager, who literally (as studies show) spends just 6 seconds reviewing each resume. So, no matter how good you are, if you can’t run this resume gauntlet, you won’t even get an interview.
Second, because companies know this process isn’t great, they’re increasingly filling jobs through private employee referrals instead of through public job listings. So, if you haven’t already met and impressed someone at a company, you can be out of luck.
